Stoicism Study Group
Shastao Institute of Practical Philosophy (SIPP)
SIPP announces the start of a study/discussion group on the philosophy of Stoicism, beginning Wednesday, January 5, meeting every other week. The reading focuses on the Discourses of Epictetus, who lived from 55-135 CE. Stoicism, although a complete philosophy, is best known for its ethics. It is a way of life, rather than an academic subject, a way of life that many still find inspiring and practical today.
The study group meets every other Wednesday, for one hour, 7 to 8 pm, at SIPP, 3609 N. Old Stage Rd., Mt. Shasta. There is no tuition for this course. Epictetus’ Discourses is available in its entirety online at http://classics.mit.edu/Epictetus/discourses.html. For the first meeting, read Book One. Although not required reading, those who want to read background about the Stoics, recommended sites include Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

Hello, Friends,
I have an exciting announcement, and I wanted to include some of you in this new endeavor.
A core group of interested people have permission to rent the Dunsmuir Methodist church building, for very little, until we grow in number. (Their last service was Jan. 30--doors are now locked.)
Since I've been attending various traditiional church bible classes locally for the past two years, I have felt a calling to go into the Church People's world and bridge the gap that is keeping them separate from experiencing God. So this new Oak Street Community Church in Dunsmuir would do two things:
1. Awaken people to the real meaning behind the words of Jesus and the stories in the Bible. ("Get off your knees. It is not to me that you pray, but to your Father which is within.")
2. Bring back enthusiasm, new businesses, more growth in the vicintity of Dunsmuir, currently shrinking in number.
Would you be interested in joining in this endeavor?
I'm looking for a lady named Kim who had attended our Center for Spiritual Growth a time or two, and lived in Castella. Does anyone know her last name, or how to reach her?
Here's the PSA I've sent in, here and there:

Forming a Community Church
Ever want to plan a church just the way you think it should be? Now's you're chance. During February and March, a group is gathering at the Dunsmuir Brewery Works, corner of Spruce and Dunsmuir Ave, at 10:00 am on Saturdays. (They have the best coffee around!) As the group grows and planning continues, it will move into the Methodist Church building on Oak St., which has now closed its doors.
Everyone is invited to join the Saturday planning group. Phone Rev. Eleanor Richard 938-2930 for more details.

The class is approximately one hour long. The class is offered as a community service, and a glad-free gift of love to all.
The Four-Part Foundational Class includes:
1. Relaxation-Meditation,
2. Breathing with Awareness or Conscious Breathing, and Breathing Exercises,
3. Four Basic Stretches, and Four Neck and Back Exercises, and

Observers are welcome. Come for any part of the class; come any Saturday you can. You may wear regular clothes, or something more comfortable.
After the class, about 3:15 there will be a "Sharing, Caring, and Fun Time" for those who would like to share their gifts, talents, services, etc. -- music, singing, dancing, good information, food, etc. This "time" will end about 4pm, so you may come just for this "time", if you like.
