We are located in Weed, California near the base of Mt. Shasta in Northern California. We are Alistair and Carol Mowat, beekeepers. What began as a hobby 7 years ago is now our full-time work. We manage about 500 colonies of healthy bees we carefully move around the Mt. Shasta countryside in rhythm with seasonal flowering. Depending on the year, this variety of flower blossoms allows us to produce varietal honeys such as manzanita and vetch (a pea flower) clover, blackberry, alfalfa, starthistle and wildflower.
Our lucky bees spend the winters in the milder Redding area. There they prepare to pollinate almonds in the northern central valley in February before coming home in the spring to make honey.
We use centrifugal force to spin the honey from the comb and leave it to settle before bottling to insure a clear product. We extract all of our honey in Weed. No heating, no chemicals. We pack only the honey we produce, never other peoples unknown honey.
We also make a variety of pure beeswax products with our solar melted wax including candles and cosmetic quality wax blocks.

Black Bear Diner
Old Fashion Home Cooking
In 1995, founders Bob & Laurie Manley with founding partner Bruce Dean, created the first Black Bear Diner in Mt. Shasta, California. In choosing a name and a theme for their restaurant, Bob, Laurie, and Bruce, immediately decided upon the black bear. It was a natural. The legendary black bear is native to the Mt. Shasta area, which was once known as Berryvale, due to the vast strawberry fields once enjoyed by bears and townspeople alike. The first Black Bear Diner sits on the site of these fields.

Back in 1965, Fred DeLuca set out to fulfill his dream of becoming a medical doctor. Searching for a way to help pay for his education, a family friend suggested he open a submarine sandwich shop. With a loan of $1,000, the friend—Dr. Peter Buck—offered to become Fred’s partner, and a business relationship was forged that would change the landscape of the fast food industry.
The first store was opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in August, 1965. Then, they set a goal of having 32 stores opened in 10 years. Fred soon learned the basics of running a business, as well as the importance of serving a well-made, high quality product, providing excellent customer service, keeping operating costs low and finding great locations. These early lessons continue to serve as the foundation for successful SUBWAY® restaurants around the world.
